  32. Lohmann was observed during winter and spring in
  33. saline lakes ranging in salinity from 2 to 78&amp; in the
  34. Vestfold Hills, Antarctica. The ciliate remained active
  35. during winter, and contained chlorophyll even though
  36. the level of light available for photosynthesis was
  37. minimal. No evidence of encystment as a means of
  38. survival during winter was observed. A seasonal study
  39. in one of the lakes, Ace Lake, revealed that M. rubrum
  40. was present throughout the year at abundances
  41. ranging from 1]104 to 3.5]105 cells l~1. During the
  42. winter period, when little light penetrated the lakeÕs
  43. ice cover, cells were most common immediately under
  44. the ice at 2 m, where cell numbers were typically

  248. Lohmann was observed during winter and spring in&#13;
  249. saline lakes ranging in salinity from 2 to 78&amp; in the&#13;
  250. Vestfold Hills, Antarctica. The ciliate remained active&#13;
  251. during winter, and contained chlorophyll even though&#13;
  252. the level of light available for photosynthesis was&#13;
  253. minimal. No evidence of encystment as a means of&#13;
  254. survival during winter was observed. A seasonal study&#13;
  255. in one of the lakes, Ace Lake, revealed that M. rubrum&#13;
  256. was present throughout the year at abundances&#13;
  257. ranging from 1]104 to 3.5]105 cells l~1. During the&#13;
  258. winter period, when little light penetrated the lakeÕs&#13;
  259. ice cover, cells were most common immediately under&#13;
  260. the ice at 2 m, where cell numbers were typically&#13;
